College students (n.): Hungry, broke people who don’t know how to cook.

Cody and Chloe (n.): College students.

Cody (the boyfriend) and I have been attempting this “cooking” thing for a while now, but it’s time for some nutrition and budgeting. We want to take you along for the journey.

We need to learn how to cook affordable and healthy meals.

Tonight’s dish: Chicken Broccoli Rice Bowls

Here goes nothing.

Ingredients:

  • Vegetable Broth
  • Chicken Breast
  • Garlic
  • Rice
  • Broccoli

Price: $15

Our store adventures are always interesting, because we are still at that point where we have no clue where certain items are located… Ex. Vegetable Broth. I probably spent a good 7 minutes staring at the products in the canned vegetable aisle looking for this dang broth. I found chicken and beef broth, but the vegetable broth was nowhere to be found. Eventually, a store employee brought me some, and I was less than pleased that I couldn’t find it myself.

I am pretty sure we read the instructions 40 times to make sure we followed a step by step process of making the food. When I said we know very little about cooking, I wasn’t kidding. We learned that Cody follows instructions way better than I do. (I just want to be able to do my own thing.)

We got everything settled and set to a boil, and it was time to cut the broccoli. I had never cut broccoli before so that was an experience. As I was cutting the broccoli I noticed a slimy-being on it. Naturally, I freaked out even more when we discovered it was alive. The anxiety continued when we discovered it was a…wait for it… maggot.

Needless to say we didn’t eat broccoli. I called the store right away because that’s GROSS.

After everything was finished, (and we sort of regained our appetites…I still don’t really have one), we dished up and ate. The food was good, but we need to work on the presentation. It kind of looked like mush.

Tonight’s final product: Chicken [No Broccoli] Rice Bowls

What we have learned:

  • Don’t forget to spray the pan because the rice will get stuck to the bottom of it.
  • Don’t let Chloe read the instructions.
  • Don’t buy the raw broccoli, frozen is a safer option. (again, EW.)

I hope you got a good laugh from this honest, unfortunate post. We probably should have taken advantage of those opportunities to cook with our moms when we were younger. Learn from our mistakes people!

Until next time, (we will be gourmet chefs by then).

Chlo and Cod

P.S. Cody did the dishes. What a gentleman.
