As some of you may know I am all about the many aspects of marketing, but I have found my strength to be in digital marketing specifically, at least thus far in my career adventure. I have spent some time pondering why I was so captivated by the idea of marketing, and why it was such an easy decision to develop a career in that industry.
Then I realized something, something that I am surprised I did not realize long before.
The truth is, the reality is, I have been marketing myself since I was 12 years old. You might wonder how I did that from such a young age, and the answer is very simple. The creation and increased popularity of digital platforms caused me to thoughtlessly market myself from a young age.
Obviously the way I marketed myself changed over time, and I still cringe when Facebook brings back a post from the past. Have you ever seen your old posts? I laugh at the things the 12-year-old version of myself would say. I was portraying myself purposely just the same, however, no matter what age I was.
There is a lot of skepticism behind the idea of digital media, and I am still trying to figure out the role it has played in my life. Regardless, I can’t shake the haunting idea that I have been putting content out there to market myself ever since I created my digital profiles, and there is something powerful about that. Think about it, anything you have posted, you have done so with a purpose in the back of your mind, whether that be a comment, photo, relationship status, or a status update of your life. You wanted people to see you in a certain way, to keep up with you, and to connect with you on a certain level that only digital platforms can provide.
When you created your digital profiles, and when I created mine way back when, we were given a voice. We could use that voice in any way we felt was necessary in portraying ourselves, and we started developing this digital identity that is untouchable.
Now that I’ve been working within the field of marketing and advertising for a few years I have come to find that this is exactly what marketing embraces. Every company, every individual wants that voice, that fresh idea, those inspirational values that attract users to interact with them on digital platforms.
Essentially that is what we do today and what we have been doing since we have gone digital. It makes sense that when I thought of a career and heard what marketing entailed I was attracted to it, because I’ve been doing it almost my entire life.
My blog, my career, and my current knowledge might not exist if not for growing up with digital platforms. I was always taught that they were the enemy, but maybe in some strange way they provided me with the opportunity to find my voice.
I wanted to share these thoughts, because I think it’s important to find a deeper meaning behind what you decide to do with the rest of your life. I truly think that no matter what it is, there is a reason why you have stuck with it, and there is a reason why you have a talent in that field.
You should discover that meaning, because it could provide you with further excitement and clarity about what you have accomplished, where you’re going, and how you will get there – no matter what part of your career you are at right now.
For those of you still reading, thank you first of all, and I would love to hear any examples of what led you to an industry or your personal interests! I challenge you to challenge yourself.
